In 1884 it was decided to require eight-hour working day for its 400,000 members from May 1, 1886. To enforce this the workers went on strike. At a meeting at the Haymarket in Chicago, they opened that would protect strikebreakers, fire on the strikers. Continued clashes tes led to the seven workers were sentenced to death.
